Three security personnel at a nightclub in downtown Winnipeg are facing assault charges following an incident that left a Winnipeg Sea Bears player seriously injured earlier this month, according to authorities. Teddy Allen was hospitalized after being attacked at the nightclub during the early hours of August 3, as reported by the Canadian Elite Basketball League team. The three security employees, aged 35, 37, and 58, were arrested on Wednesday and charged with assault causing bodily harm, as stated in a police news release on Thursday. They were subsequently released on undertakings.
While the specific nightclub was not disclosed by the police, it was mentioned to be located on Main Street, between Portage and William avenues. Allen, in a statement issued through the team on Thursday, revealed that he has undergone medical examinations, received a diagnosis, and is currently recovering at home. He expressed that the assault was unwarranted and should never have occurred.
Allen further stated, “The thing about my life is that when I’ve been knocked down, I get back up, which is exactly what I’m going to do now.” Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident, including potential dashcam or cellphone footage captured around the time of the assault, to contact the Winnipeg police major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or provide an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS or online.
CBC News has sought a response from the Sea Bears regarding the matter.
