Conservative and Bloc Members of Parliament have requested an urgent session of the House of Commons public safety committee to investigate allegations of espionage involving a former Canadian intern detained by Belgian authorities on suspicion of spying.
Expressing deep concern, Conservative MP Frank Caputo emphasized the need to scrutinize Canada’s national security screening procedures in light of the allegations. Caputo stressed the importance of determining any potential security gaps that could have jeopardized sensitive information or the security of Canada and its allies.
The individual in question, Biwei Zhang, had served as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. While Belgian officials did not disclose her identity, a CBC News report identified Zhang as a systems engineer with an economics background.
Zhang’s online resume indicates previous employment with the Canadian Space Agency and Statistics Canada. European security sources, including Reuters, reported that the intern’s behavior had raised suspicions within NATO’s internal security services. Allegedly, Zhang displayed excessive curiosity about colleagues, ventured into unauthorized areas, and accessed files beyond her designated responsibilities within SHAPE’s IT Department.
Zhang is currently under detention in Belgium, with the allegations against her yet to be substantiated in court.
In response to the situation, Caputo announced that the committee would investigate how Zhang secured the NATO internship, the extent of security screening conducted prior to granting her access, whether any concerns were raised by Canadian or allied authorities, and the adequacy of monitoring measures.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has vowed to delve into Canada’s security screening protocols and uncover the details of the incident. Caputo emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, stating that Canadians deserve to understand the circumstances surrounding the case.
The incident has prompted a review of Canada’s security protocols, with Anandasangaree emphasizing the need to prevent similar incidents in the future. Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated that Canadian security officials were actively involved in the matter from the outset.
