The Winnipeg Sea Bears clinched their first Canadian Elite Basketball League championship by defeating the Brampton Honey Badgers 98-84 in the league’s championship game. Simon Hildebrandt, a local hero, sealed the victory with a three-pointer in front of a record crowd of 12,519 at the Canada Life Centre. Xavier Moon, a three-time CEBL MVP, led the Sea Bears with 29 points, including seven rebounds and six assists, securing his third Finals MVP award. Despite the absence of injured star forward Teddy Allen, Moon’s return after a five-year hiatus played a pivotal role in Winnipeg’s success.
Moon expressed his joy at winning in a city that had never won a playoff game before, emphasizing the significance of this victory. Jelani Watson-Gayle, a Sea Bears guard, contributed with five three-pointers off the bench, while Hildebrandt added four threes and finished with 24 points. On the opposing side, Sean East II led the Honey Badgers with 27 points, supported by Trentyn Flowers with 20 points. The Sea Bears led at halftime and maintained their advantage to secure the championship.
Coach Mike Raimbault commended the team’s effort and dedication, highlighting the organization’s deserving championship win. The CEBL championship, initially planned as a three-game series, reverted to a single-game format due to unforeseen circumstances, resulting in the Sea Bears’ triumphant victory. Both teams had fought their way through the playoffs to reach the final, with the Sea Bears overcoming the Saskatoon Mamba and Vancouver Bandits, and the Honey Badgers defeating the Ottawa BlackJacks and Niagara River Lions.
Despite falling short, East II acknowledged the progress made by the Brampton program, reflecting on their journey in the league. The Sea Bears’ victory marked a historic moment for the team and the city of Winnipeg, solidifying their position as the new CEBL champions.
