A murder trial related to the killing of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur commenced with the selection of jurors for a former gang member on Monday, nearly three decades after the tragic incident. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, aged 63, is accused of murder with a deadly weapon in connection to Shakur’s 1996 death. Davis, who has been in custody since 2023, has pleaded not guilty. The trial is underway in Las Vegas, where the shooting occurred, and is anticipated to span approximately a month.
The prosecution’s strategy in the trial does not involve proving that Davis was the one who pulled the trigger. Instead, they aim to persuade the jury that he played a significant role as the “shot caller” within the group that targeted Shakur in the shooting on the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996.
During the jury selection process, Davis, dressed in a blue shirt and tie, sat alongside his attorney as Nevada Judge Carli Kierny questioned a pool of 75 potential jurors about various aspects, such as medical conditions, language barriers, and scheduling conflicts.
Shakur’s cousin, William Leslane, expressed his belief that while the trial might offer some form of accountability, the delayed pursuit of justice has weakened its impact. The shooting incident occurred on the night of September 7 while Shakur and Knight were in Las Vegas to attend a boxing match. Following the fight, they were driving in a BMW owned by Death Row Records when a Cadillac approached and fired shots at their vehicle. Shakur sustained fatal injuries, passing away six days later.
The circumstances surrounding Shakur’s murder sparked widespread speculation and conspiracy theories, with tensions between East and West Coast rappers adding to the complexity of the case. Notorious B.I.G., a prominent figure in East Coast rap, also fell victim to a fatal shooting a year after Shakur’s death.
Davis revealed in his book that the shooting was motivated by a desire for revenge after an altercation involving his nephew and individuals associated with Death Row Records. He recounted the events leading up to the shooting and detailed his perception of the unfolding incident.
