Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, shared her experience of becoming her brother’s primary caregiver after their mother’s passing this summer. Balancing caring for her neurodivergent brother, Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, has presented challenges. Despite this, she cherishes their companionship. Abrahamsohn reflected on past struggles, including societal misunderstandings of neurodivergence. She acknowledged her own ADHD and efforts to manage it while supporting Stuart’s needs. Their living arrangement requires understanding and compromise to create a harmonious environment. As she embraces this role, Abrahamsohn aims to empower Stuart and strengthen their bond, recognizing the value of their relationship above personal sacrifices.
