A grand jury in Los Angeles County has charged Nick Reiner with murder in connection to the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and included an allegation that he had planned the attack in advance. The grand jury issued the indictment on July 20, which was made public on Wednesday when Nick Reiner, aged 32, entered a plea of not guilty.
The victims, Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their home in the upscale Brentwood area of Los Angeles on December 14. Nick Reiner was apprehended shortly after the incident and formally charged two days later.
The indictment marks a significant progression towards a trial, allowing prosecutors to bypass the preliminary hearing phase in California, where evidence is presented publicly. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.”
The unsealed indictment mentions little new information about the case, which has been kept under wraps. However, the claim of lying in wait, coupled with other circumstances, makes Reiner eligible for the death penalty, though prosecutors have not yet confirmed whether they will pursue it.
Details regarding why Reiner was lying in wait were not disclosed in the indictment, which also alleges the use of a knife in the killings. Motives behind the attack remain undisclosed, with minimal leaks from either side of the case.
The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports publicly, but legal constraints have prevented this action. Meanwhile, Nick Reiner is embroiled in a legal battle over unpaid funds from a trust established by his parents, sought to assist in his defense. The trust, valued at a minimum of $1.5 million US, has been withheld from Nick Reiner by trustees, despite legal documents indicating his entitlement to the funds.
In a plea for access to the trust funds, Reiner asserts his love for his parents and expresses devastation over their deaths. The lawsuit focuses on the fund’s management rather than the circumstances of the killings.
A court hearing regarding the trust issue is scheduled for the following week. The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment.
Rob Reiner, originally an actor acclaimed for his role in “All in the Family,” transitioned into a successful director known for iconic films like “This is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” and “When Harry Met Sally…” His wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was a photographer, and their son Nick Reiner co-wrote the script for the film “Being Charlie” in 2015.
The Reiner family tragedy has left the eldest son, Jake Reiner, reeling, describing the experience as an incomprehensible nightmare.
