In a remarkable incident during a Sinfonia Lahti concert in Finland, a conductor unintentionally dislodged an 18th-century violin worth £1 million from soloist Elina Vahala’s grasp, causing it to plummet to the ground. The conductor, Matthew Halls, accidentally made contact with the instrument while energetically conducting the orchestra, leading to its airborne trajectory towards the floor.

Despite the initial shock, Elina managed to swiftly react by positioning her foot beneath the falling violin, cushioning its impact and averting potential severe damage. Following the violin’s landing on the floor, Elina, visibly distressed, paused briefly to retrieve her cherished instrument as the orchestra halted under Mr. Halls’ direction.

The violin involved is a rare creation by the renowned Italian craftsman Giovanni Battista Guadagnini from the 18th century, with similar instruments commanding values ranging from £869,000 to £2.6 million. Post the incident, a quick inspection ensured the violin’s integrity before it was returned to Elina, allowing the concert to resume. While the violin appeared undamaged, Elina noticed a slight alteration in its sound, indicating a minor internal shift or loosened seam.

Elina expressed gratitude for her reflexive action in protecting the violin, emphasizing its personal significance beyond its monetary value as an extension of her musical identity. The violin was later assessed by a specialist who identified minor damage involving a loose seam, remarking on the potential for more severe consequences such as cracks or neck breakage in such circumstances.

Conductor Halls issued an apology for the mishap, with the orchestra offering support to Elina. The soloist, harboring no ill feelings, looks forward to resuming performances with her restored instrument at upcoming concerts.
