Barry Hearn has come to the defense of Ronnie O’Sullivan after the snooker star withdrew from The Masters tournament just days before it was set to begin, citing medical reasons. O’Sullivan, an eight-time Masters champion, has skipped several events in the past year, but his absence from this prestigious tournament in London came as a surprise.

Hearn dismissed claims that O’Sullivan is primarily driven by money, emphasizing that the player chooses when to compete based on his own standards and preferences. Acknowledging O’Sullivan’s exceptional talent, Hearn expressed the importance of other players stepping up to entertain fans in his absence.

“The fans may be disappointed when Ronnie is not playing, but it’s crucial for other players to recognize the opportunity to shine in his shadow,” Hearn stated in an interview with the BBC’s Framed podcast. He stressed the need for emerging talents to fill the void left by O’Sullivan and highlighted the positive impact the player has had on the sport.

Hearn pointed out that while O’Sullivan’s presence is missed, it is essential for the sport to evolve beyond reliance on a single star player. He expressed optimism about the potential rise of new talents capable of captivating audiences, regardless of their nationality.

Reflecting on O’Sullivan’s significant contributions to snooker, Hearn concluded by expressing his desire for the player’s well-being above all else, emphasizing that O’Sullivan’s happiness should be the priority in any decision regarding his participation in competitions.
