Aldi has once again secured the title of the most cost-effective supermarket for the month, as per the latest price analysis by Which?.

In February, Which? compared prices of a shopping list comprising 89 items and discovered that Aldi maintained an average price of £161.56 throughout the month. Lidl followed closely behind, only £1.19 more expensive, with their list totaling £162.75. Asda claimed the third spot at £181.06, with Tesco coming in fourth with a Clubcard at £181.58.

The comprehensive list included both branded and own-brand items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For a smaller selection of items, Waitrose emerged as the priciest supermarket this month, with an average total of £217.02, which is £55.46 more than Aldi’s pricing.

Further comparisons by Which? involved a longer list of 225 items, where Tesco stood out as the most economical choice for Clubcard members. Tesco’s larger shopping list cost £580.35, edging out Asda by £3.97 at £584.32.

In instances without a Clubcard, Tesco’s shopping bill increased to £629.25, a £48.90 difference. Notably, Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their narrower product range compared to other supermarkets.

Waitrose also maintained its status as the priciest option on average, with the larger shopping list amounting to £650.11, a £69.76 variance from Tesco with a Clubcard.

Which?’s analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable, excluding multibuy offers.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented, “Aldi has clinched the top position this month, but the intense competition between discounters keeps Lidl a fantastic choice for those seeking to cut their grocery expenses. Tesco’s Clubcard provides value for branded product enthusiasts, with hopes for broader accessibility in the future.”

Sewraz added, “With ongoing financial strains, our research highlights the significant savings that discerning shopping choices can bring over the year.”
