Union leaders are celebrating a significant advancement for workers, with 9.6 million individuals gaining enhanced sick pay rights following a prolonged struggle. New legislation taking effect today will grant statutory sick pay to 1.2 million low-wage workers for the first time, while an additional 8.4 million will qualify for immediate sick pay benefits. Moreover, a considerable number will now have access to new paternity leave entitlements.

These changes mark the initial set of actions under the prominent Employment Rights Act. TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak expressed, “This is a pivotal moment for workers, with the first individual rights introduced by the Employment Rights Act finally becoming effective after extensive advocacy efforts by unions and employees. The implications of these new provisions will be felt nationwide, transforming lives.”

The key adjustment ensures that employees will be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay from the onset of illness, eliminating the previous four-day waiting period regardless of their salary level. This adjustment is projected to provide workers with an additional £400 million annually in sick pay, fostering an environment where individuals can prioritize rest and recovery without the worry of income loss.

Employment minister Dame Diana Johnson stated, “No individual should ever face the decision between their health and livelihood. The enduring dilemma of choosing between missing a day’s pay or working while unwell is no longer acceptable. Today’s significant alterations will aid in employee recuperation while offering businesses the assurance that their workforce can return healthier and more productive.”
