England has pledged to support their captain Maro Itoje during the difficult time of his mother’s passing. Itoje recently shared the sad news of his mother Florence’s demise in December, prompting him to travel to Nigeria for her funeral.
The 31-year-old player missed Saracens’ Premiership match against Newcastle to be with his family in Nigeria and was also absent from the Six Nations launch in Edinburgh. His friend Jamie George stepped in for media responsibilities and expressed empathy, drawing on his own experience of losing his mother during the Six Nations in 2024.
George emphasized the importance of allowing Itoje the necessary time to grieve and heal before returning to the team fully prepared. Despite currently being in Nigeria, Itoje is expected to rejoin the squad in Spain for their warm-weather camp ahead of their opening game against Wales at Twickenham on February 7.
Steve Borthwick, the head coach, acknowledged the emotional challenges Itoje is facing and highlighted the significance of his time in Nigeria. Borthwick praised Itoje’s leadership qualities and eagerly anticipates his return to the team.
In an emotional Instagram post, Itoje mourned his mother’s loss, describing her as his confidant, friend, and guide. He expressed gratitude for her impact on his life and shared his belief that she is watching over their family from heaven.
