An abusive husband has been given a sentence for kicking his wife without reason while on a cruise to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. Alan Dop, on a lavish Mediterranean cruise with his wife in August last year, kicked her, causing bruising and swelling, as detailed by prosecutor Elen Owen. Additionally, Dop grabbed, shook, and threw his wife, resulting in back injuries. The incident occurred in a cruise setting, making it challenging for the victim to seek help.
The couple’s seven-year-old son witnessed the attack. Dop and the victim had been in a relationship since 2004, celebrating a decade of marriage and sharing a son. Dop’s drinking problem had escalated in the past two years, leading his wife to request him to leave, which he refused. Described as extremely abusive towards her when intoxicated, Dop’s behavior had become concerning.
In an episode at their residence in Gwynedd following the cruise, the victim requested Dop to move to another room due to his inebriated state, but he refused and engaged in physical aggression. The victim managed to escape and contacted the authorities, revealing Dop was heavily intoxicated. Dop confessed to assault causing bodily harm and assault by beating.
The victim, distressed and feeling isolated and trapped, experienced subsequent assaults, leaving her feeling unwell. Dop, as per Judge Simon Mills, tried to shift blame onto the victim. However, Dop showed remorse and acknowledged the severity of his actions. Despite his past positive contributions, Dop’s unhealthy relationship with alcohol was highlighted.
The court sentenced Dop to a 12-month suspended term for exhibiting post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and an alcohol addiction. Judge Mills emphasized Dop’s responsibility to address his issues, noting his close avoidance of imprisonment. Dop received a seven-year restraining order to protect the victim, with child contact arrangements to be managed through a third party.
