Travelers passing through a bustling airport have received a caution regarding potential exposure to a case of measles. Health authorities in New Jersey have raised alarm after confirming that an individual contracted the highly contagious illness following international travel and transit at Newark Liberty International Airport.
According to reports from CBS News, people present at Newark Liberty’s Terminal B between 5:30 am and 9 am on April 14 may have been at risk of measles exposure. Additionally, officials have highlighted a potential exposure event at the Hackensack University Medical Center’s pediatric emergency department on April 18.
Common symptoms of measles to watch out for include a high fever, cough, sneezing, watery and red eyes, and a characteristic rash. Health experts have advised that symptoms could manifest as late as May 11 for those potentially exposed to the virus.
As of now, no other cases linked to this incident have been detected. Measles is known to spread through the air or via infected individuals’ mucus or saliva, with the virus remaining airborne for up to two hours post-exposure.
The MMR vaccine is highly recommended as the most effective preventive measure against measles and to mitigate potential complications associated with the disease.
In a separate development, parents in the UK are being urged to verify their children’s vaccination records amid a surge in measles cases across the nation. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recently issued a warning to families, emphasizing the importance of vaccination and symptom awareness in light of declining immunization rates.
Recent data indicates that England has already recorded approximately 235 confirmed measles cases in the early part of 2026, with infections reported in all regions.
