In a recent development, Donald Trump has stepped back from his prior threat to annihilate Iran entirely, opting instead for a two-week ceasefire to facilitate ongoing discussions. This decision came after the Pakistani Prime Minister made a public appeal for additional time to advance diplomatic talks with Iran.

The temporary cessation of bombings is being viewed as a constructive intervention by Pakistan, providing an opportunity for the President to navigate a conflict for which he lacked a clear exit strategy, amidst escalating oil prices due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Prior to the 8pm deadline, Trump had escalated pressure on Iran, warning of complete destruction if no agreement was reached. Subsequently, the White House confirmed Israel’s concurrence with the ceasefire, while Iran announced the temporary allowance for ships to transit through the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian military coordination for the next two weeks.

The agreement effectively grants Iran control over the crucial waterway during the ceasefire, a privilege not previously held, raising questions about potential future restrictions on ship passage fees. Trump, acknowledging a proposed “10-point plan” by Iran as a basis for negotiation, highlighted the need for safe passage of oil tankers through the Strait as a condition for the ceasefire.

The decision to pause hostilities aligns with requests from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, emphasizing the progress of diplomatic efforts towards resolving the Middle East conflict. The plea for a ceasefire was accompanied by a call for Iran to reciprocate by opening the Strait of Hormuz for the same duration, promoting a broader cessation of hostilities in the region to facilitate peace talks.

Trump’s announcement on Truth Social regarding the ceasefire outlines a strategic pause to finalize the 10-point plan with Iran, signaling a potential pathway towards sustainable peace in the Middle East. This move reflects a trend of bold declarations followed by pragmatic retreats by the President, contributing to perceptions of his negotiation style.
