Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com has introduced its new Joybuy platform in the UK in a bid to compete with major players like Amazon. The company, valued at £30 billion, offers a wide range of products including technology, appliances, beauty items, groceries, and more from renowned brands such as Apple, LEGO, Samsung, and L’Oréal.
Joybuy promises next-day delivery for orders exceeding £29 in London and several other cities like Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge, benefiting around 17 million residents. Additionally, the platform features a same-day “Double 11” delivery service for orders placed before 11 am, ensuring delivery by 11 pm. JD.com has set up its own logistics network and will operate distribution centers in Milton Keynes and Luton.
Notably, JD.com’s venture into the UK market follows its decision to withdraw from negotiations to acquire prominent British retail brands in recent years. The company considered purchasing Currys in 2024 and explored a potential takeover of Argos from Sainsbury’s last September before halting talks.
Joybuy UK’s managing director, Matthew Nobbs, expressed confidence in the firm’s prospects in the UK, emphasizing a long-term commitment and a focus on enhancing the customer experience. The company’s expansion plans also include launches in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg, following a significant deal to acquire Germany-based electronics retailer Ceconomy for 2.2 billion euros (£1.9 billion) last year.
