Global oil prices surged following the announcement by President Donald Trump that the US had intercepted and seized an Iran-flagged cargo ship. Brent crude futures jumped by 4.74% to $94.66 a barrel at 5:30 am, although this was a decrease from the 7% peak earlier in the night.
Analyst Saul Kavonic from financial services firm MST Marquee mentioned that oil markets were reacting to social media posts from the US and Iran rather than the actual challenges faced in resuming oil flows quickly. The situation is unfolding in real-time in the Strait of Hormuz as negotiations play out physically.
The delicate ceasefire between the US and Iran is at risk of collapsing after a direct naval confrontation in the Gulf of Oman. President Donald Trump confirmed that the US Navy had intercepted and seized the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska after an alleged attempt to breach an American naval blockade.
While the US is sending a delegation led by Vice President JD Vance to Islamabad, Pakistan, for further peace talks, Iranian state media has turned down the invitation. Tehran criticized the vessel seizure as an “armed robbery” and a violation of the existing truce, vowing to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until the US lifts its maritime blockade.
The ceasefire is set to expire soon, and both Tehran and Washington seem far from reaching a peace agreement. This comes shortly after a period where tensions appeared to be easing.
Oil prices had plummeted over 10% on Friday when Iran declared that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen fully. Brent oil started at around $98 but dropped to $86.52 a barrel shortly after Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s announcement.
Former head of counterterrorism under Mr. Trump, Joe Kent, publicly advised the President to exit the war promptly, cautioning against further escalation. Kent suggested that Trump should recognize the lack of a guaranteed positive outcome and prioritize America’s interests by leaving the conflict now.
