Keir Starmer expressed his frustration at officials who kept him unaware of Peter Mandelson’s vetting failure, leading to a heated exchange in the Commons. The Prime Minister criticized the Foreign Office for withholding crucial information and apologized once again for appointing Lord Mandelson as the US ambassador. During a tense session in the Commons, Starmer emphasized that he would have revoked Mandelson’s appointment had he been informed of the full details of the vetting process.

Starmer revealed that officials disregarded the recommendation of the United Kingdom Security Vetting by granting Mandelson developed vetting clearance. Moreover, he highlighted that this information was not disclosed to him, the Foreign Secretary, the Deputy Prime Minister, or any other relevant authorities. Starmer condemned the deliberate decision to withhold this critical information, stating that it goes against the expectations of the public and the principles of accountability.

In an upcoming meeting of the Middle East response committee, Starmer aims to shift focus to addressing the rising cost of living, particularly in the aftermath of the Iran conflict. A source from No10 affirmed Starmer’s commitment to supporting families facing financial challenges.

The spotlight may soon turn to Sir Olly Robbins, whom Starmer dismissed as the Foreign Office permanent secretary. Sir Olly will present his perspective to the Foreign Affairs Committee, potentially posing political risks for the Prime Minister. A close associate of Sir Olly described him as deeply affected by recent events, praising his dedication to public service.

Despite facing over two hours of questioning in the Commons, Starmer stood by his decision to dismiss Sir Olly, citing a lack of satisfaction with the explanation provided. He reiterated his regret for appointing Mandelson and extended his apologies to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein for the oversight.

A Labour MP commended Starmer’s handling of the situation and raised concerns about the relationship between the government and non-elected civil servants. However, Starmer did not address speculations that No10 was pressured into confirming Mandelson’s appointment following a leak.

In a day marked by political turmoil, two MPs were removed from the Commons for disruptive behavior. The Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, ejected Reform’s Lee Anderson and Your Party’s Zarah Sultana amid heated exchanges. Anderson’s accusation of Starmer lying and Sultana’s labeling of Starmer as a liar led to their expulsion from the chamber.
