A man involved in a tragic mass shooting in Louisiana referenced “demons” before fatally shooting eight young children. Shamar Elkins, aged 31, disclosed feelings of suicide prior to the disturbing incident that took place in Shreveport. Reportedly, after a dispute with his spouse, Elkins carried out the shooting, resulting in the deaths of eight children between the ages of three and 11. It is believed that seven of the children were his own, while his wife sustained critical injuries.

Weeks before the violent episode, Elkins had expressed struggles with “dark thoughts” and had forewarned his stepfather about the challenges of overcoming personal demons. Family members revealed that Elkins, who had a history of mental health issues, had confided suicidal intentions during a conversation with his stepfather. Amid the distressing call on Easter Sunday, Elkins revealed his wife’s desire for a divorce and his own suicidal thoughts, despite the background noise of his children playing joyfully.

Elkins’ interaction with his stepfather highlighted his internal struggle, with his final words indicating a sense of hopelessness. Following the call, Elkins abruptly disconnected, mentioning plans to inform his children about their grandparents in Oklahoma City. The tragic event culminated in a police pursuit that ended in Elkins’ death after officers engaged him.

Although the motive behind the violence remains unclear, authorities have labeled it as a domestic incident. This incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years, sparking nationwide outrage. Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed profound shock over the tragedy, emphasizing the incomprehensibility of such a devastating event.

Elkins, an armed forces veteran, served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from 2013 to 2020 in various capacities. Despite his military background, he succumbed to his inner turmoil, leaving a trail of devastation in the community.
