In today’s world, broadband has become a crucial necessity, supporting various activities like streaming entertainment, remote work, home security through internet-enabled cameras, and managing smart home devices such as lighting and heating.
With the increasing adoption of internet-connected devices and the rise in online content consumption, the demand for fast and reliable broadband access is higher than ever. However, not all internet service providers (ISPs) are delivering the same level of performance.
According to a recent report by SpeedGo, a new broadband speed-testing service, Virgin Media leads the UK in average download speeds, reaching an impressive 256.5Mbps. This speed translates to downloading a full HD movie in just over two minutes, more than three times faster than the national average.
Following Virgin Media, Vodafone secured the second position with average download speeds of 175Mbps, trailed by BT (EE). At the lower end of the spectrum was TalkTalk, reporting an average speed of just under 95Mbps.
The average download speeds of major UK ISPs are as follows:
– Virgin Media: 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone: 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE): 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband: 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk: 94.7Mbps
Additionally, SpeedGo’s analysis of upload speeds, crucial for users who transfer large files or work remotely, revealed Vodafone as the top performer with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, outpacing Virgin Media in this category.
SpeedGo affirmed the results, stating, “In 2025, Virgin Media stood out as the provider of the fastest broadband internet in the United Kingdom, offering an average download speed of 256.5Mbps. Vodafone led in average upload speed at 83.6Mbps.”
