Millions of British travelers gearing up for their Easter getaways are being cautioned about a common mistake that could lead to significant losses. In bustling airports, a seemingly harmless item in your luggage can become a gateway for thieves to access your personal information and belongings.

According to Mike Harvey, the managing director of 1st Move International, the practice of printing full family names and home addresses on luggage tags can expose travelers to serious risks. Harvey emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between making your bag easily identifiable and safeguarding your personal information. Revealing too much detail on luggage tags can potentially expose individuals to identity theft, financial scams, break-ins, and other security threats.

The disclosure of home addresses can signal to criminals that a property is unoccupied, making it a target for theft. Revealing passport numbers or insurance information could aid scammers in orchestrating fraudulent schemes. Additionally, revealing information about valuable items can attract unwanted attention to your bags.

A recent report highlighted on Fox News uncovered a scam where discarded bag tags, including those provided by airlines, were exploited to submit false reimbursement claims using owners’ names and flight data.

To prevent any potential disruptions, Harvey recommends keeping luggage tags simple and limited to essential contact information such as names, phone numbers, and email addresses. He advises including your full name matching your passport, a phone number with the country code for quick contact, and an email address, preferably a separate one for travel correspondence to keep your primary inbox secure.

Regarding disposable tags, it is advisable to keep them attached to your items until you can safely dispose of them at home. Suggestions from Reddit users include placing contact details inside the suitcase or using alternative addresses like a work location or a family member’s residence for added safety measures.
