A young man from Lanarkshire faced a life-altering brain injury at 17, prompting his family and friends to raise over £21,000 to support his care. Daniel, now 22, was known for his humor until a bike accident at 60 miles per hour changed his life in 2020. After being hit by a car while cycling home, he was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s head injury unit, leaving his parents shocked.

Despite initial uncertainty about the severity of his condition, it became clear that Daniel had sustained a significant head injury. Following multiple surgeries and the removal of a large portion of his skull to reduce brain swelling, Daniel’s recovery journey was perilous. His resilience was tested further by a meningitis diagnosis, rendering him dependent on caregivers for basic needs and limiting his ability to communicate effectively.

Debbie, Daniel’s mother, highlighted the challenges they faced in finding suitable accommodation due to his unrehabilitatable status. Despite ongoing financial burdens, the family’s dedication to Daniel’s well-being shone through as they organized fundraising events. A recent ball, orchestrated by family friends, raised a substantial amount toward Daniel’s care, showcasing the community’s support.

The funds collected will aid in covering essential expenses like physiotherapy and specialized equipment, with hopes of providing Daniel with enriching experiences like a trip to Amsterdam. Debbie emphasized the importance of raising awareness for cycling safety, urging individuals to prioritize safety measures such as wearing helmets. The family’s commitment to Daniel’s recovery and advocacy for improved safety measures exemplifies their unwavering support and determination.
