Britain’s pubs and restaurants play a vital role in our communities. The hospitality industry faces challenges from increasing energy costs due to volatile fossil fuel markets. To address this, the government is pushing for clean, domestically controlled energy sources to enhance energy security and reduce bills.
Efforts include investing in solar, onshore and offshore wind projects, and advancing nuclear development to transition away from fossil fuels. To aid struggling hospitality businesses, a new energy-saving scheme is being introduced. This initiative offers tailored plans to reduce energy consumption and emissions for over 525 pubs, restaurants, and hotels.
The scheme has already proven successful, with some establishments cutting overnight energy use by 66%, resulting in significant savings. For instance, a pub in Caterham saved over £1,500 yearly, while a Bromley pub reduced weekly expenses by £48, equating to substantial annual savings.
Apart from cost reductions, the program contributes to lower carbon emissions, aligning with environmental goals. By empowering owners to optimize energy usage, businesses can focus on serving customers and expanding operations. Thriving small businesses benefit communities by creating jobs and providing gathering spaces for residents.
The government’s commitment to supporting the hospitality sector includes reductions in business rates for pubs and a £10 million Hospitality Support Fund. These initiatives aim to safeguard businesses, families, and communities nationwide in line with clean energy objectives.
