Legendary snooker commentator John Virgo has passed away at 79, leaving a void in the sport. Virgo, hailing from Salford, had a successful playing career, clinching the UK Championship title in 1979. He breathed his last in Spain, his place of residence, last Wednesday.
The sad news was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis on social media. Expressing heartfelt condolences, Francis shared that Virgo continued to entertain until the end, dedicating himself to what he loved most.
The BBC also mourned the loss, announcing Virgo’s demise at the age of 79. The World Snooker Tour echoed the sentiment, expressing deep sorrow at the passing of the iconic figure. Snooker stars like Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Shaun Murphy, and Neil Robertson paid tribute, recalling Virgo’s significant contributions to the sport.
Known for his famous catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” Virgo transitioned from a player to a renowned commentator, earning a spot in the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame. His flamboyant waistcoats and trick shots added to his charm.
During his tenure, Virgo reached the 10th spot in the world rankings and hosted the popular BBC show “Big Break” alongside Jim Davidson. Reflecting on their successful partnership, Virgo highlighted the unique chemistry they shared, despite their different backgrounds.
In 2020, Virgo and his wife Rosie Ries relocated to Spain for a change in environment due to his long-standing neck injury. He openly discussed his gambling struggles in a 2017 interview, leaving behind his children, Gary, and Brook-Leah, from previous marriages.
