Glenn Deir, a retired journalist residing in St. John’s, shares his experience of battling cancer and undergoing treatment in this personal account. Following throat surgery in July to remove cancerous tissues, Glenn’s diet was restricted to liquid and pureed foods due to swallowing difficulties. Despite multiple swallow tests and challenges with solid foods, Glenn remained determined and underwent radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Forced to cancel a planned moose hunting trip, Glenn’s dedication to recovery was evident. With the support of his healthcare team at St. Clare’s Hospital, Glenn persevered through treatment, including intensive swallow therapy. Gradually, his ability to swallow improved, allowing him to reintroduce solid foods into his diet. While still facing challenges such as reduced saliva production and occasional coughing, Glenn remains optimistic and grateful for his progress. His story serves as a testament to resilience and the importance of perseverance during challenging times.
