The reopening of Rainbow Bridge, dubbed as the “scariest” bridge, follows extensive maintenance work that cost over £8 million. Located in southeast Texas, spanning the Neches River between Port Arthur and Bridge City, the bridge has gained significant online attention.
Known for its steep incline and high arch to prevent interference with shipping, Rainbow Bridge boasts a vertical clearance of 177 feet. Since 1997, it has operated as a one-way westbound traffic route with narrow lanes, offering a dramatic drive for motorists between Jefferson and Orange counties.
Closed in March last year for major maintenance, the bridge underwent significant structural repairs, including concrete deck restoration, steel railing repairs, and the replacement of 1,200 rivets and four steel member pins. During the closure, motorists diverted to the nearby Veterans Memorial Bridge, which was temporarily adjusted to accommodate the traffic shift.
The Texas Department of Transportation announced the completion of the maintenance works on March 26, with a thorough inspection conducted before reopening on April 11. This reopening is a significant relief for motorists, as the construction of Rainbow Bridge originally started in 1936 and took two years to complete.
In other news, the renowned Jumeirah Burj Al Arab hotel in the UAE recently announced plans for an 18-month closure for a phased renovation to upgrade its iconic décor. The hotel did not reference the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, including Iranian drone strikes across the Gulf, which have impacted tourism in the region according to reports.
