A residence in a peaceful neighborhood attracted a swarm of police officers armed with weapons following reports of gunshots and a cry for help, only to discover a different scenario. Located in Ferring, near Essex, the commotion ensued when a concerned neighbor dialed 999, fearing a severe incident in the small village. Responding promptly, armed officers, ambulances, and even an air ambulance descended on the quiet street around 3:30 pm on Saturday, April 18, prompted by suspicions of a potential shooting.
Contrary to expectations, the officers encountered neither firearms nor casualties but rather a loud session of playing “Call of Duty” on a new sound system. Pictures from the scene depicted numerous police vehicles lined up on the village road, with about a dozen officers, some armed and one even equipped with a chainsaw, heading towards the residence. Despite the initial alarm, authorities swiftly confirmed the absence of weapons and injuries.
The realistic gunfire sounds and loud shouts from the video game player led a nearby resident to contact the police, triggering a full emergency response, as reported by Your Southend. Essex Police clarified: “We received a report of a potential firearm injury at an address on Sherwood Way around 3:35 pm on Saturday, April 18. Armed officers, with the assistance of emergency services, swiftly verified the absence of firearms and injuries.” The police commended the caller’s well-meaning intentions in alerting the emergency services.
In 2025, the Essex Police armed response unit was summoned to approximately 14,000 incidents, resulting in the arrest of 336 individuals. This incident echoes a previous occurrence when armed police rushed to Hussar’s Coffee House in Hampton Wick, southwest London, mistaking prop guns used for a film as real weapons. During the filming in 2016, actors, crew, and makeup artists were startled by the abrupt arrival of three police officers carrying “big guns,” only to discover that it was a film production without any criminal activity.
The Metropolitan Police clarified: “Police responded to a report of a man in possession of a firearm on High Street, Hampton Wick, on Sunday, February 21, at 3:47 pm. Upon investigation, it was determined to be a film production, with no criminal offenses disclosed.”
