A man convicted of child molestation in 2002, identified as Bradley D. Armstrong, aged 66, was taken into custody just before his planned wedding.
Authorities claim that Armstrong failed to disclose his status as a sexual violent predator when applying for a marriage license in Indiana, which is considered a serious offense under state law.
Following his arrest, concerns arose about his intention to marry a 22-year-old woman with various disabilities, including autism, fetal alcohol syndrome, and ADHD, who has been legally declared incompetent and is reportedly pregnant.
Heather Stevens, a county clerk, intervened to prevent the marriage from taking place, citing multiple red flags in the situation, besides Armstrong’s legal violation.
In a previous ruling, the court had declared the woman incompetent, appointing her parents as legal guardians, as reported by PEOPLE magazine in 2021.
Stevens emphasized that the court holds the final authority in such cases and can overrule decisions made by parents, although it’s uncertain how the woman’s parents feel about the situation.
Currently, Armstrong is prohibited from obtaining a marriage license due to state regulations preventing individuals deemed legally incompetent from marrying, as confirmed by Stevens.
Armstrong was released on a cash bond of $750 (£553) a day after the scheduled wedding date of 17 March.
