“Conor Benn’s Shocking Split: From Matchroom to Zuffa Boxing”

Barry Hearn criticized Conor Benn for his abrupt departure from Matchroom Boxing to join Zuffa Boxing without even giving Eddie Hearn a chance to discuss the situation. The 29-year-old confirmed the split and will now be managed by Dana White, the head of the Saudi-backed promoter.

Benn chose to leave the promoters who had supported him for a decade, even during challenging times like a failed drug test. Despite Eddie Hearn’s praises after Benn’s victory over Chris Eubank Jr., Benn was uninterested in any discussions with Eddie Hearn regarding their working relationship.

Barry Hearn expressed disappointment in Benn’s decision, stating that it was more than just about money. He highlighted the loyalty and dedication of the team that had supported Benn, making the move feel disrespectful and lacking in class.

Benn’s move to Zuffa makes him the second prominent signing after cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia. Eddie Hearn had previously spoken positively about the opportunities ahead for Benn, but now he will no longer be guiding his career.

Barry Hearn revealed that Conor Benn opted to involve lawyers when Eddie proposed a meeting to discuss the situation, which he found appalling given their long history together. Benn, the mandatory challenger for the WBC welterweight title, defended his decision, stating that turning down the lucrative offer would have been irrational.

Hearn Sr. emphasized that while they have high standards, Benn’s actions did not reciprocate those standards. He mentioned that a different approach from Benn could have led to a smoother transition.
