The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has once again emerged victorious. After 17 years, the band clinched the Grade 1 global title at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. This win marks the band’s seventh championship victory. Led by Pipe Major Alan Bevan, the band’s exceptional performance was commended by Glasgow Life, the organization hosting the competition.

Bevan expressed the significance of winning this prestigious championship, emphasizing that it is a major milestone for the band. Notably, this is the first time since 2010 that a band from outside the U.K. has secured the world championship title, as confirmed by Glasgow Life.

Over 200 bands from various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Oman, and Malaysia, participated in the competition. Andrew Lee, a bagpiper in the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, shared his elation at the long-awaited championship win. Having been with the band for 21 years, Lee highlighted the dedication and teamwork that led to this exceptional achievement.

The band’s meticulous preparations, starting in the fall, paid off according to Bevan. Their expressive style and focus on emulating the sound of a solo player set them apart, creating an exciting and dynamic performance. The band’s drum section, known for its energy and vigor, received enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Judged based on four performances during the intense two-day competition, the band showcased its diverse membership, including teachers, lawyers, students, and even a bagpipe maker like Lee. Bevan praised the strong piping community in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, attributing their success to the region’s excellent teachers and youth programs.
