According to Statistics Canada, a significant number of drivers crossed the newly opened Gordie Howe International Bridge into Canada during its initial days of operation.
After experiencing delays, the highly anticipated bridge that links Windsor and Detroit finally commenced traffic on July 27.
Statistics Canada’s initial data reveals that 18,900 Canadian residents made return trips from the United States via the Gordie Howe bridge within the first five days of its opening.
During the same timeframe, 18,100 U.S. residents crossed the bridge to enter Canada.
Reportedly, the neighboring border entry points, the Ambassador Bridge, and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, recorded a total of 52,700 inbound trips by both Canadian and U.S. residents during the corresponding period.
In addition, Statistics Canada notes that 4,100 commercial transport trucks entered Canada utilizing the Gordie Howe bridge in the final five days of July.
