A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits he is still coming to terms with the experience. Reflecting on the milestone, the guitarist expressed disbelief over the passage of time and the band’s farewell show’s impact on fans.
The emotional evening saw Hip frontman Gord Downie bid farewell to a captivated audience at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place, in 2016. Downie’s poignant rendition of iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” left both fans and the singer himself in tears as they shared a heartfelt goodbye.
Following their formation in 1984, The Tragically Hip released 13 studio albums and concluded their touring activities in 2016 with a memorable hometown performance on August 20. Tragically, Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, led to his passing in October 2017 at the age of 53.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the band’s final show, CBC will be airing a rebroadcast of the concert. Guitarist Rob Baker expressed gratitude for the continued support from fans and emphasized that the upcoming event is more about remembrance than celebration, marking the end of a cherished career.
Langlois recalled feeling a mix of unease and sadness before the last performance but found solace and inspiration upon witnessing Downie’s infectious optimism during soundcheck. Baker highlighted his role in supporting Downie’s final wish to connect with every audience member personally, despite the emotional challenges he faced throughout the tour.
Despite initial concerns about Downie’s health impacting his stage presence, the band witnessed his physical improvement during the farewell tour. Looking back, Langlois admitted that they had underestimated the profound impact of their final show, realizing its significance only in the aftermath.
While Baker and Langlois confirmed that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, the band recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from their farewell tour. Baker emphasized the healing power of music, recounting a personal moment of emotional release and acknowledging the therapeutic nature of music in processing grief and life’s challenges.
