Nigel Farage secured victory over Count Binface, a satirical candidate in a trash-can costume, in a special election held on Friday to reclaim his parliamentary seat after resigning a month earlier. Farage, the leader of the anti-immigration Reform UK party and a potential future prime minister, stepped down amid an investigation into an alleged undisclosed £5-million or $9.3-million gift from a foreign cryptocurrency billionaire.

To prove his support among voters, Farage ran for the vacant seat and won with 63% of the votes, with Binface coming in second with approximately 27%. Despite the turnout of 44% on the hottest day of the year, major parties boycotted the election, viewing it as a political maneuver by Farage.

Binface, known for his unconventional political platforms and previous challenges to prime ministers, emerged as the primary challenger among 34 candidates after major parties boycotted the race. Farage declared victory early on but skipped the official declaration event, citing concerns of organized disruptions, a claim disputed by the police.

Binface campaigned on eccentric promises such as tax cuts for some and tax hikes for others, constructing a single affordable home, and nationalizing singer Adele. Farage’s win in the Clacton area highlighted his local support, but his parliamentary seat could still be at risk due to an ongoing investigation into an undeclared donation from a cryptocurrency tycoon in Thailand.

Farage defended the donation as a personal gift used for security expenses before his election. Newly elected officials are required to disclose gifts over £300 ($560 Cdn) related to political activities. Despite facing scrutiny over his finances and describing it as a targeted attack, Farage’s popularity has waned, evident in the extensive field of independent and minor-party candidates he faced in the special election.

Binface’s comical campaign, portraying himself as an alien from Sigma IX, drew significant attention, overshadowing other unconventional candidates like Howling Laud Hope from The Official Monster Raving Loony Party and Marcus White from the Everyone is God Party.
