“The Odyssey” continues its impressive performance at the box office, raking in $1.1 billion in the United States since its release on July 17, as reported by The Associated Press. This Greek epic adaptation now stands as director Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, excluding inflation adjustments, surpassing his previous hit “The Dark Knight Rises” from 2012. In comparison, “The Dark Knight” and “Oppenheimer” fell slightly short of the billion-dollar mark, earning $1 billion and $975 million, respectively.

Another standout film this week is Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which exceeded expectations with a global earning of $1.67 billion after its premiere on July 31, with an impressive $360 million generated during its opening weekend. This achievement places it among the top-grossing movies of all time, breaking Marvel records and positioning it as the highest-grossing film of the year. “Brand New Day” is also the second-fastest movie to reach $1 billion in revenue, following closely behind “Avengers: Endgame.”

“The Odyssey” is set for a significant release in the Chinese market, with a dedicated rollout on 800 Imax screens. The anticipation for the film in China is high, with Imax China’s CEO expecting massive demand. The film’s impressive performance is attributed in part to the allure of Imax technology, which has maintained popularity and distinction in the cinema industry. As a pioneer in event cinema, Imax technology has played a crucial role in enhancing the movie-watching experience, particularly with high-profile releases like “Avatar” and Nolan’s “The Odyssey.”

Christopher Nolan’s strong association with Imax is evident in his decision to film “The Odyssey” entirely in Imax format, making it a milestone for the company and marking it as the highest-grossing domestic release for Imax. The success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” has contributed to Hollywood’s resurgence in box-office revenue, with ticket sales outpacing the previous year. The industry is experiencing a notable increase in billion-dollar movies, signaling a positive trend for the summer theatrical season, with revenue expected to surpass $4 billion, reflecting a thriving business for Hollywood.
