An environmentally friendly holiday park near Morpeth in Northumberland clinched the top spot in the region at the recent Destination North East England Tourism Awards held on March 19.

Tranwell Farm Holidays emerged as the winner in the Camping, Glamping, and Holiday Park of the Year category at the 24th edition of the annual ceremony. Situated on a farm nurtured by the family for over six decades, the site has introduced a variety of distinctive glamping experiences since 2022.

Accommodation choices range from grass pitches amidst picturesque meadows to the option of bringing your own caravan or campervan. The park offers a cozy shepherd’s hut for two, a comfortable camping pod, and two woodland lodges enveloped by trees, each featuring a private log-fired hot tub.

Visitors can partake in special activities during their stay, such as interacting with the park’s rare breed lambs, including the chance to bottle feed or witness a birth. Moreover, the park is located in an area designated as a ‘dark sky,’ making it an exceptional spot for stargazing.

For those interested in stargazing, rental options include stargazing kits equipped with binoculars, hot water bottles, and a rug, as well as the opportunity to hire a telescope for a deeper exploration of the celestial realm.

Just a short drive away lies Morpeth, a historic market town traversed by the River Wansbeck. The town boasts a traditional high street housing a mix of chain and independent stores, along with the upscale boutiques found in the indoor Sanderson Arcade.

Take a leisurely stroll along the riverfront Carlisle Park to admire historical landmarks like Morpeth Court, formerly a court and gaol, now repurposed into a vibrant antiques center, café, and holiday apartments. Another unique attraction is the Morpeth Chantry, a medieval chantry house transformed into a bagpipe museum often featuring live performances.

Northumberland is renowned for its extensive, pristine beaches, with several accessible options nearby. Roughly half an hour away is Blyth Beach, a sandy and shingle beach complete with a lengthy promenade and colorful beach huts. The water quality at this beach has been rated as ‘excellent,’ ideal for swimming or surfing under suitable conditions.

Another nearby destination is Cambois Beach, offering a sandy beach setting characterized by pretty sand dunes and footpaths meandering through the sandy landscape. While facilities are limited, this secluded spot is perfect for tranquil walks and is a favorite among dog walkers. Fishing enthusiasts also frequent this spot, attracted by the opportunity to catch flounder and cod.
