Whenever you entrust your luggage to the airline’s care, there’s always a lingering possibility that it might never find its way back to you. Despite advancements in luggage tracking technology, some bags still vanish without a trace, seemingly lost forever.

Unclaimed or lost luggage that cannot be reunited with its owner often ends up being auctioned off to interested companies. In the United States, specifically at the Unclaimed Baggage warehouse in Scottsboro, Alabama, these items find a new home. This expansive facility, resembling a large thrift store, handles items that airlines have failed to return to their rightful owners and even has agreements with select airlines to purchase unclaimed baggage.

While most unclaimed bags typically contain mundane contents like soiled clothing, intriguing discoveries have been made at the facility, prompting the release of an annual “Found Report.” This report showcases some of the bizarre and captivating items recovered from lost luggage, highlighting the most valuable and common items people misplace.

According to Sonni Hood, the public relations manager working at the shop alongside her cousin Adam, items with direct skin contact are not sold by the facility. This policy results in the disposal of items like sex toys, diaries, human ashes, used makeup, and firearms.

The most peculiar find in 2026 was a fully assembled robot, topping the list of unusual discoveries. Additionally, items like a giant stuffed goose, a frog-shaped handbag, and a complete fake skeleton added to the array of unusual belongings uncovered.

Valuable items have also made their way to the facility, with a pair of diamond earrings valued at $43,000 marking the priciest discovery in 2026. Rolexes, high-end camera gear, and designer handbags were among the valuable items unearthed.

The report further delves into the most common items found in lost luggage, including a significant number of men’s t-shirts, trousers, jewelry pieces, mobile phones, and pairs of shoes. Notable fashion items like a beauty pageant outfit and a lynx fur coat also made their way to the facility.

International treasures lost by globetrotters, such as a Tibetan singing bowl, African masks, and Polynesian ceremonial garments, were also discovered. Historical artifacts like a 1945 army magazine on Japan’s occupation, a nuclear radiation detector, and a 1957 letter to Marilyn Monroe provided glimpses into the past.

The report recounts intriguing anecdotes of items bought and sold by the facility, including instances like stumbling upon a suitcase purely filled with rat poison or undervaluing a valuable art deco statue wrapped in bubble wrap. Past years have seen equally bizarre finds, like a jar of whiskey housing a preserved rattlesnake and an ancient French exorcism manual.

One memorable incident involved a deceivingly heavy bag that upon inspection turned out to be nothing more than a collection of rocks. The mysteries behind such peculiar possessions often remain unsolved, leaving room for speculation.
