The transition in the UK from old copper phone and broadband lines to faster and more reliable full fibre technology is gaining momentum. Millions have already made the switch to this enhanced connectivity, and more households are set to move away from copper cables soon.

BT’s Openreach has officially announced that 1.2 million properties will be impacted by the “Stop Sell” alerts, with 132 new locations included in the end-of-life list. When a Stop Sell is implemented at a phone exchange, internet service providers relying on Openreach’s network, such as BT, Sky, TalkTalk, and Vodafone, are prohibited from selling traditional copper-based phone and broadband services in areas where full fibre is accessible.

Consequently, new contracts or renewals will mandate a switch to fibre broadband. This shift also affects traditional landlines, gradually being replaced by Digital Voice, which enables calls over an internet connection instead of the aging wires still visible in many neighborhoods.

Although some older and vulnerable customers have expressed concerns about the transition, Digital Voice offers improved call quality and extra features like spam call blocking and call diversion to mobile phones.

Openreach assures that customers without access to full fibre will not be impacted and can continue using their current copper-based services until fibre availability in their location.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized the significance of the stop sell program in advancing the UK towards a modern full fibre era. He highlighted the necessity of transitioning people to newer, future-proof technologies as copper’s capability to support modern communication diminishes.

To determine the available services at your address, utilize the Openreach postcode checker to confirm if full fibre has been deployed in your vicinity.

The list of newly affected locations by Stop Sell alerts includes various areas like York (Acomb), Rawmarsh, Kirkby In Ashfield, Seaham, Irvine (Stanecastle), Breaston (Draycott), and many others across different regions.
