Lindsey Vonn has emotionally revealed that she has been discharged from the hospital after a serious leg injury she suffered during the Winter Olympics. Vonn was transported to the hospital by helicopter following a mishap in the downhill event in Italy, just days after an ACL injury.
After undergoing multiple surgeries, the skiing icon was initially released from the hospital in Italy to return to the United States for additional medical care. In a poignant Instagram post, Vonn detailed her injuries, which included compartment syndrome and a fractured ankle, and praised her surgeon for saving her leg from amputation.
In a video shared on Instagram, Vonn explained the complexities of her injuries, mentioning a complex tibia fracture, a fractured fibula head, and compartment syndrome, which occurs when excessive blood accumulates in an area, leading to tissue damage.
Dr. Tom Hackett performed a fasciotomy to save Vonn’s leg by allowing it to recover. Vonn expressed gratitude for the successful six-hour surgery and emphasized the importance of her previous ACL tear in having the right medical help at the time of the accident.
Despite a longer hospital stay due to low hemoglobin levels and the need for a blood transfusion, Vonn is now out of the hospital but remains in a wheelchair due to a broken right ankle. She plans to progress to crutches in the coming weeks and anticipates a lengthy recovery process, potentially requiring further surgery for her ACL.
Vonn’s lengthy caption accompanying the video outlined her journey, expressing hope for a full recovery over the next year. She emphasized the challenges faced during her hospital stay and the importance of rehabilitation in her healing process.
Vonn concluded her post by thanking her followers for their support and expressing determination to overcome the obstacles ahead.
