Nicky Henderson has finally settled the debate surrounding Constitution Hill’s potential involvement in the upcoming Cheltenham Festival after weeks of speculation. The exceptional hurdler, who had an unblemished record over hurdles until a fall in the 2025 Champion Hurdle, has been the subject of much discussion regarding his future path.

Following the disappointing sequence of falls in recent hurdle races, Henderson took a strategic move by testing Constitution Hill on the flat for the first time at a specially organized race at Southwell over 1m4f on the all-weather track. Surpassing expectations, Constitution Hill triumphed by a significant margin in front of an enthusiastic audience exceeding 3,000, showcasing a promising display akin to a proficient flat racer.

Acknowledging the pivotal nature of the decision, Henderson expressed the dilemma he faced after the impressive Southwell victory, recognizing the potential risks involved in a Cheltenham appearance. Despite the positive outcome at Southwell, Henderson deliberated extensively with owner Michael Buckley, emphasizing the importance of an upcoming schooling session in Lambourn to finalize the verdict.

As anticipation mounted, the odds for Constitution Hill’s participation in the Champion Hurdle dwindled, indicating a shift in sentiment. Subsequently, Henderson confirmed the decision to withdraw Constitution Hill from the Cheltenham event, signaling a likely transition from the jumping discipline to focus on flat racing.

In a statement, Henderson conveyed gratitude for the overwhelming support and affection shown towards Constitution Hill, emphasizing the tough but necessary choice to safeguard the horse’s future prospects. The decision marks an end to a remarkable chapter in Constitution Hill’s jumping career, paving the way for new opportunities in flat racing.

Reflecting on Constitution Hill’s illustrious hurdling journey, Henderson expressed appreciation for the highs and lows experienced, highlighting the enduring legacy left by the extraordinary horse. Despite the decision to forego Cheltenham, Constitution Hill will be honored with a parade on Champion Hurdle day, providing a final opportunity for National Hunt enthusiasts to bid farewell to the beloved hurdler.

Constitution Hill’s remarkable winning streak in hurdle races, including victories in prestigious events like the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle, solidified his reputation as a standout performer in the racing world.
