Police in Manchester conducted a significant operation, resulting in the shutdown of a major illegal streaming service that provided unauthorized access to premium content from Sky TV. Following the closure, four individuals were arrested, and equipment worth £750,000 was seized.
The investigation was initiated after Sky detected suspicious activities related to a large-scale illegal streaming network. The operation was found to supply millions of users across the UK with an unlawful IPTV service. One suspect allegedly profited over £3 million from this illicit operation, causing widespread disruption nationwide.
Although households utilizing the illegal streams were not directly targeted by law enforcement, they will no longer be able to access the content they were viewing. Detective Constable Jordan Day from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) highlighted the criminal nature of these services, emphasizing the significant profits generated by organized crime operations.
Matt Hibbert, Sky’s Group Director of Anti-Piracy, commended the police for their swift action against piracy. He stressed the importance of safeguarding content investments and collaborating with authorities to dismantle criminal networks behind piracy. Additionally, he warned viewers about the risks associated with illegal streaming, citing security concerns such as malware threats.
The crackdown on this illegal streaming network exemplifies the collaborative efforts between law enforcement and industry players like Sky to combat piracy and protect consumers from potential security risks.
